    Analysis of Figurative Language Use in Poem Written by Emily Dickinson

    The aims of this research are to explore the use of figurative language in Emily Dickinson's poems through a theoretical study approach, with the hope of providing new insights into the aesthetic richness and meaning in these classic literary works. The research aims to analyze the various types of language that are used in poems by the researcher to understand how the kinds of language used in poetry are used. The researcher collected data from books and the internet, focusing on literature and poetry sources related to Emily Dickinson. Specifically, the researcher focuses on simile, metaphor, personification, paradox, and hyperbole. In the first part, the research is a qualitative method where the researcher uses data from book poems by means of the researcher reading the lines of the previous poem, identifying, understanding, and drawing conclusions from each poem. The study shows that the poem by the author is important because it uses these phrases to make readers think and imagine. The historical context and biography of the author also provide deeper insights into this poem, providing insights into how literary works often reflect and respond to the social and personal conditions of their authors. In addition, it is recommended to conduct comparative studies between the use and other poems by other female writers of the same period or with writers who have similar literary styles. These recommendations are expected to provide guidance for students, researchers, and campuses in conducting research on literature, particularly on figuring out how to use language to express her ideas and create a unique literary experience for readers.

    The Analysis of Slang Words Used by The Characters in No Hard No Feelings Movie (Sociolinguistics Approach)

    This research is conducted to investigate the types of slang and the slang function in the movie entitled No Hard Feelings movie. Generally, people think that American slang is dominantly used by teenager. Therefore, it is interesting to conduct slang research on ordinary American family since they are part of American people. The researcher uses descriptive-qualitative method in conducting the research. Meanwhile, sociolinguistics is applied as the frame of study. The source of the data is obtained from the dialogue script of this movie. The data are taken by applying total sampling technique. Based on the total sampling technique, the researcher obtains twenty-five slang data. In conducting the research, the researcher finds two findings. The first finding is the slang type. There are 4 types of slang employed by the characters in No Hard Feelings movie. The types of slang words are fresh and creative, flippant, imitative, and clipping. Meanwhile, the second finding is the slang functions of the use of slang. There are seven different slang functions in this movie. They are to address, to form intimate atmosphere, to initiate relax conversation, to show impression, to show intimacy, to reveal anger, and to humiliate. This research is expected to give better knowledge about American slang and better understanding about slang terms. In addition, the researcher expects the students of English Department who is interested in slang research to use this research as a reference. The researcher also expects the other students are capable to develop slang research further to enrich knowledge about slang words since slang is widely use in English language nowadays.

    Grammatical Cohesion in "The Sailing Bali" Student Texts: Systemic Functional Linguistics Perpective

    English is very important because English is used by most people living the word. Because of that reason, Indonesian communities are trigger to learn English from early age because having English competence makes the user be able to compete in the world. The Sailing Bali is one of tourism colleges found in Denpasar which prepares the students work in cruise line or oversea. This research would like to explore the level of English competence owned by The Sailing Bali. This research is very important to know the readiness of the student before working in cruise line or overseas. To explore the English competence for the students of The Sailing Bali, the researcher used theory of grammatical cohesion proposed from Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) by Halliday. The theory has advantage to explore the competence owned by the learner of English through conjunction, reference, and substitution, ellipses as well. The data were taken from the students’ work in written work. The clauses made by the students were identified, examined, and analysed with theory of grammatical cohesion. The result of research is presented in narrative. Each student work is formulated in text, namely; Text I, II, III, IV, and V. Each text is analysed based on the part of grammatical cohesion, namely; conjunction, reference, substitution, ellipse as well. The result of the research showed grammatical cohesion used in the texts are dominated by reference personal. The reference personal used in the texts indicate introduction for themselves. Conjunction used in the texts are very limited. The elaboration conjunctions found in the texts are used to state the reasons to work in cruise line. The extension conjunctions used in the texts serve to state the students get some advantages while working in cruise line. The substitution is not found in the texts. This research is categorised as multi-disciplines so this research gives some significances for applied linguistics such as; semantic, SFL, semiotic, and teaching. In addition, this research plays an important role for The Sailing Bali because the result of the research can be used as reference to improve teaching. The result of the research can be used as measurement so the management of The Sailing Bali can take the decision based on the evaluation. This researcher expects other SFL researchers to do research in teaching field so the SFL research become more popular in linguistics field.

    The Analysis of Idoomatic Expression Found in " Alice's Adventure in Wonderland and Throught to the Looking Glass" (An Analysis Their Forms and Meanings)

    This research aims to analyze the types of idioms and meanings in the novel entitled Alice Adventure in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Idiomatic expressions are part of the elements of the English language, it needs to be mastered by English learners because idioms are often found orally and in writing and communication. With the explanation above, Novel Alice In Wonderland can be used as a source for learning idiom because this novel is written in English language like in explain above idiomatic expression are part of the elements of the English language. This study was used qualitative descriptive method to analysis idiomatic expression on Alice Adventure in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. The researcher used the theory from Adelnia & Dastjerdi (2011) to find out form of idiomatic expression and the theory from Fernando (1996) to analyze meaning of idiomatic expression. The result of this research based on the data finding the total of form idiomatic expression are 60 idiomatic expressions. So, total of classified of form idiomatic expression is 10 colloquialism, 2 proverbs, 4 slang, 2 Allusion, 42 phrasal verbs. Based on the data there finding the total of meaning idiomatic expression are 60 idiomatic expressions. So, total of classified of type meaning idiomatic expression is 29 transparent idioms, 11 semi- transparent idioms, 12 semi-opaque idioms, 8 opaque idioms.

    The Philosophy of Lutung Kesarung Text: Systemic Functional Linguistics Perspective

    Text of Lutung Kesarung is one of narrative text which is very well known in West Java. However, the philosophy of the text has not been comprehended very well by a lot of West Javanese communities. This research would like to explore the philosophy of the text so the result of the research brings some advantages for the communities. The theory used for the research is Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) because the theory of linguistics involves language and social context. The scopes of the research are material process analysis and the ideology of the text. The method of the research uses qualitative, grounded theory. The data were collected from written text. Material process data were taken from the clauses which involve physical activities. The verbs used were examined then they were analysed with theory of material process of SFL. Context of social involves two aspects, namely; context of situation and context of culture. Context of situation involves field, tenor, and mode. Context of culture is associated with the structure of the text. The result of the research indicates: (i) Transformative verbs used in the text indicate the forgiving Prabu Rarang for her mistake. Creative verbs used in the text indicate Prabu Rarang perform competition to legalize to be a queen. (ii) The ideology of the text teaches us that we have to forgive persons who do mistake because they are not conscious to behave in communities. Prabu Rarang represents bad behaviour, while Prabu Sari represents good behaviour. Both Prabu Rarang and Prabu Sari exists in our body. When we are greedy, jealous, selfish, and alike, we are Prabu Rarang. When we are calm, kind, helpful, friendly, and alike, we are Prabu Sari. The text teaches us how to encourage Prabu Sari in our live instead of Prabu Rarang. Lutung is associated with greediness, while Kesarung means unhappiness, dissatisfaction, imbalance in the life. Lutung Kesarung means persons who behave greedily will have unhappy life. This research is categorised as multi disciplinaries so this research brings some positive impacts for researches such as; semiotic, teaching, sociolinguistics, semantics, syntax, discourse analysis, and literature. This research is expected to be useful for communities by comprehending the philosophy. In addition, this research is expected to trigger other linguistic researchers to explore the philosophy of other local narrative texts because there are a lot of other narrative texts which have not been explored yet.
